When you’ve been scuba diving in your homecountry or on holiday, there is a big chance your dive guide was a PADI Divemaster. He or she made sure you had the right equipment, told you about safety procedures, explained the dive in a dive briefing, took care of you underwater, checking if everything was alright, helping you if there was a problem, showing you the interesting things to see underwater and, did a debriefing afterwards about the sea life, the dive itself and any helpful tips for you as a diver. This is, in short, what we teach to our PADI Divemaster Candidates at Sea Spirit Diving Resort in Giardini-Naxos/Taormina, Sicily, Italy. For Sea Spirit, guiding a recreational diver to the first professional level of a PADI Divemaster, is an important step and also an exciting one! Instead of taking care of yourself or taking care of your buddy, you are going to take care of a group of divers and step up as a leader.
We think as a PADI Divemaster you have to be capable to answer questions and have knowledge about the different aspects of diving. That’s why we teach you not only how to become a good dive guide, but also about the theory behind diving, for example, what happens in the human body when we’re diving, how pressure works underwater, how does dive equipment work and what can you do when something malfunctions? On top of that, we also teach our Divemaster candidates how to handle a compressor correctly, how to make a planning of the day so they understand the structure behind a day at the sea, we mentor them in how to give information to customers and understand their needs. We explain about safety on the boat and how to assist a skipper. And of course there are the workshops to work on diving skills: deep diving, search and recovery, how to conduct discover scuba diving and not to forget, assisting the instructors on all the PADI courses.
